Article from Timaru Herald 10/6/19:
The 58-year-old, who had an impressive amateur career, before turning pro in 2010 and winning nine times on Australia's Legends Tour, is cutting back on his playing commitments because of a shoulder injury that is refusing to come right
The net result is that he and his wife, Margaret, reopened the Gleniti Golf Club's pro shop a week ago and as well as coaching lessons and retailing they are also undertaking catering for members
"I think it is about 10 years since the pro shop was last open," he said
Hayes said he was looking for a career change and after a long time in Australia where he experienced how smaller clubs like Gleniti were run, he believes the Gleniti set up was ripe for development
"In the big picture, we may even open a cafe for this end of Timaru, but will have to discuss that with the club first"
Hayes has been a member at Gleniti for 38 years, winning the club championships 20 times, but said this latest venture was a great opportunity to boost the club as he looked to encourage new memberships and increase the take from green fees
"The facility is not being used. There are plans to improve and a new practice and driving areas are being developed"
Hayes began his golfing career as a 12-year-old and made over 100 appearances for South Canterbury in New Zealand's senior interprovincial tournament and later many others at masters level before dabbling in the professional ranks
"I suffered a shoulder injury about 18 months and it's just not the same now and I still want to be in golf. I still plan to play a bit in Australia but only a week or two at a time"
He said this was a perfect opportunity to do both
